So firstly, let us know what does SDG – 15(Life on Land) demand!? 

“Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.” In simple terms, Imagine Earth as a big garden that has seen better days. Our mission? Nurse it back to health! We're talking about tree-planting parties, stopping the spread of deserts, fixing damaged lands, and ensuring every cute little creature, from ants to zebras to hippos or any huge animal that comes to your vision, has a safe place to call home. 

How do we do it?

“The Global Goals” clearly defines a set of things they want every responsible individual to follow with respect to “Life on Land” SDG. We shall now see each of those in detail. 

1. “Find a Goal 15 charity you want to support. Any donation, big or small, can make a difference!” Are you ready to be an eco-hero? Consider supporting a Goal 15 charity! These superheroes work to protect our precious land and all its inhabitants. Did you know? Every 2 seconds, an area the size of a football field is lost due to deforestation! But fear not, your donation, big or small, can be a game-changer. Even a few bucks can plant trees, restore habitats, and save endangered species.

2. “Reduce your use of paper. Avoid printing and substitute it with electronic devices or carriers.”

Opt for digital over paper to reduce environmental impact. Every year, 4 billion trees are cut down for paper production. Transitioning to electronic devices saves trees and minimizes waste as well. Make the switch today for a greener tomorrow. 

3. “Don’t shop for pets! Visit your local animal shelter and adopt an animal there.”

Go for adoption from local shelters instead of buying pets. Each year, around 6.5 million pet animals enter state shelters, with many facing euthanasia! So, adopting not only saves lives but also supports animal welfare. Choose compassion over commerce. 

4. “Don’t buy products tested on animals: Check the labels on the products you buy.” 

Skip products tested on animals. Look for labels indicating cruelty-free options, ensuring no furry friends were harmed in the making. Choose brands like "Leaping Bunny" certified products, guaranteeing ethical practices. Your purchase power can spare countless animals from unnecessary suffering. 

5. “Recycle paper, glass, plastic, metal and old electronics.” 

The age-old concept of 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle from our science text books serves as the key to most of our environmental problems. Therefore, make sure you adhere to them in any way possible. 

6. “Don’t use pesticides. To protect and sustain the quality of soil, don’t use chemicals while growing plants.” 

Give your garden some love without pesticides. Those chemicals may destroy bugs but harm soil and many other creatures that calls soil their home. Instead, use natural remedies like companion planting or beneficial insects. Companion planting is like matchmaking for plants. It involves strategically planting different species near each other to enhance growth, repel pests, attract beneficial insects, and improve pollination. Your soil will thank you, and your plants will thrive without the toxic stuff. It's a win-win for you and Mother Nature! 

7. “Clean your local parks and forests.” 

Roll up your sleeves and lend a hand to clean up local parks and forests. Grab a trash bag, gloves, and some friends, and spend a day giving back to nature. Every piece of litter you pick up helps keep these natural spaces beautiful for everyone to enjoy. But most importantly do not litter in the first place. 

8. Reduce Your Carbon Footprint and Use Sustainable Transportation 

Hop on the eco-train and ditch those carbon-emitting rides! Opt for greener modes of transportation like biking, walking, or using public transit whenever possible. Did you know? India is the fourth largest emitter of carbon dioxide (CO2) globally.

Times of novelty has woven the threads of sustainable development which calls for the amalgamation of biodiversity and ecosystem with governmental planning, the need of the hour. Covering the urban landscapes and the rural regions, a delicate balance is desired between human advancement and environmental conservation that converges on the requisite of fabricating a cordial approach to government. A volatile and flourishing future can be envisioned by employing facilities that accommodates biodiversity and ecosystem into the framework of policy making.

Biodiversity is elucidated as the premise upon which ecosystem flourish, that constitutes the affluent diversity of life and all living organisms. Enveloping the tiny, ground organisms and the massive dwellers of the rainforest, biodiversity emerges as a core support of the ecosystem service. Conversely, ecosystem happens to be the vigorous interactions between living organisms and their respective physical environment. They comprise of a comprehensive range of habitats stretching from forests and wetlands to grasslands and marine environments, each exhibiting a distinct biological variability and ecological processes.

The Vitality of Integration

Biodiversity and ecosystem are prone to anomalous threats from unregulated human activities that encompasses habitat destruction, pollution, change in climatic conditions, excessive use of natural resources and alike. In spite of possessing the quality of being essential, human activities has driven the damage of ecosystem and biodiversity all over the world. With the increment in cases of extinction, the requirement to integrate areas of preservation into governance has been  critical.

Apart from the loss of biodiversity, certain other aspects of ecosystem have surfaced that comprises of global food security, human health and the civilization of the societal and economical domains of the country.

Strategies for Integration

1.      Policy Alignment: Government should ensure the alignment of varied policies, plans and regulations, laying their main focus on management of ecosystem and conservation of biodiversity.

2.      Stakeholder engagement: In order to integrate multiple perspectives and interests into government planning, it is important to involve varied stakeholders including local people, NGOs and private sectors into the decision making process.

3.      Holistic approach: Adopting a holistic approach that considers ecological, social as well as economic dimensions represents a paradigm shift towards  more sustainable development pathways.

4.      Capacity building: This involves providing training, education, and support to government agencies, policymakers, and local communities so as to help them enhance their understanding of ecosystem management principles and biodiversity conservation strategies.

5.      Public Awareness and Education : Raising public knowledge of biodiversity protection and ecological services through various education programs can help in creating awareness and fostering a culture of innovation and development.



 Challenges and Opportunities

The significance of biodiversity and ecosystem in governance has witnessed ever increasing acknowledgement and participation. Yet innumerable challenges arise in the process of integration which alters its efficiency. Some of the challenges involves lack of funding, insufficient political conviction, limitations in the implementation and enforcement capacity and institutional disintegration.

The party to this integration i.e. government, international organization, civil society and the private sector have to unitedly work to address such challenges in order to promote a healthy environment and the continuum of sustenance.

Nevertheless, a ray of hope exists amidst the darkness in the shape of innovation and collaboration opportunities.  Ecosystem resurrection and green infrastructure have stood out as rewarding segments of nature-based solutions for dealing with the aforementioned challenges. Productivity and efficiency can be elevated by dint of ecosystem-based approaches in the sphere of agriculture, forestry and fishery.

An all round approach that preserves a balance between socio-economic development and environmental conservation can provide for an enhanced ecosystem for the time ahead by promoting a shift of thoughts and actions towards sustainability and productivity.
